There are venues that are simply built for photography โ and theย Berkeley City Clubย is absolutely one of them. When Alex and Kelly chose this stunning Julia Morgan landmark for their wedding day, I knew we were in for something truly special.
The Berkeley City Club sits in the heart of Berkeley, California, and it never stops surprising me. Designed by the legendary architect Julia Morgan โ the same woman behind Hearst Castle โ the building is a masterpiece of Mediterranean Revival architecture. Every corridor, courtyard, and corner offers something beautiful to work with: arched doorways, warm stone walls, intricate ironwork, and light that feels almost curated. As a Bay Area wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of shooting at some incredible venues, but the Berkeley City Club holds a very particular place in my heart.
Alex & Kelly | A Berkeley City Club Wedding
Alex and Kelly are exactly the kind of couple I love working with. Warm, relaxed, genuinely happy in each other’s presence; the kind of couple where you don’t have to manufacture moments because the real ones keep happening. From the quiet of getting ready to the full celebration with family and friends, their day unfolded with ease and joy in every frame.
Getting Ready at the Berkeley City Club
The detail shots from Alex and Kelly’s day reflect the thoughtfulness they brought to every element โ the florals, the attire, the personal touches that made the day unmistakably theirs. The Berkeley City Club’s interior spaces provide a naturally elegant backdrop for getting-ready coverage, with soft ambient light that makes every detail image feel timeless rather than staged.
The Ceremony
Few settings rival the drama and romance of a Berkeley City Club ceremony. The architecture does so much of the work โ layers of warmth and history surrounding two people making their most important promises. Alex and Kelly’s ceremony was intimate and emotionally charged, and the venue’s scale gave it a gravity that perfectly matched the moment.
Portraits Around the Berkeley City Club
One of my favorite parts of shooting at this venue is the portrait opportunities it offers. From the courtyard to the grand interior spaces, there’s no shortage of backdrops that feel both timeless and distinct. Alex and Kelly were naturals in front of the camera โ relaxed, playful, and completely present with each other. These are the portraits I live for.
The Reception
The Berkeley City Club transforms beautifully for a reception. The warmth of the architecture, the candlelight, the energy of everyone gathered โ it creates a visual atmosphere that’s nearly impossible to replicate elsewhere. Alex and Kelly’s guests filled the space with laughter, dancing, and the kind of full-room joy that tells you a couple is genuinely loved by their people.
Why the Berkeley City Club is One of the Best Wedding Venues in the East Bay
If you’re planning a wedding in Berkeley or the greater East Bay and looking for a venue with real architectural character, the Berkeley City Club deserves a serious look. It photographs beautifully in every season, works for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations, and carries a sense of history that makes every image feel like it was made to last.
As a Berkeley and Bay Area wedding photographer, I’d be thrilled to return to this venue again and again.
